EAL

It is a fundamental principle at The John of Gaunt School that all students are fully included in the life of the school, whether that is through their academic experiences or the wider life of clubs, activities and extension opportunities. Students for whom English is an additional language will receive a warm welcome on their arrival at the school. You and your child will be given a tour of all the classrooms and facilities and every effort will be made to make your family as familiar as possible with the school routines, rules, uniform and what is expected of our students.

Students making the transition from local primary schools will be assessed and supported as necessary.

To help your child settle into a new and at first probably rather daunting environment, they will be introduced, where possible, to another student who speaks their language. This young person will act as a ‘buddy’ in their first year to answer any questions and help wherever they can. In addition, they will be introduced to an English-speaking student in their tutor or teaching group who will be a friendly face and someone to help them with their social English.

An important first step is the admission/parent interviews. This is a chance for you to tell us, with the help of an interpreter if necessary, all you can about your child’s abilities and needs.

We will carry out an initial language assessment to decide how best to support you child. This will be updated as and when necessary and will include recommendations for lesson support. This information will be shared with your child’s teachers and provide them with the resources they need to make sure your child makes quick, and sustained, progress with their learning..

We provide ongoing support for all the years your child is with us and is tailored to suit your child’s needs. Your child will be encouraged to take a GCSE in their home language if it is offered. This will help them towards gaining access to our 6th form or other further studies.

We value your involvement with your child’s education and will do all we can to support you and your family.
