NEWSLETTER 12 - 10 December 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Although the term is soon coming to an end, it is still busy with students working extremely hard. In many subject this week students have been having their end of term assessments. It was also great to see so many parents of Year 11 students engage in parents evening. This week the Government announced Plan B. As we are already following extra precautions, there is not any need to change anything in school. We are however very mindful of the new variant and will continue to monitor the advice in order to ensure we are doing all we can to keep people safe.

Next week is the last week of term and on Wednesday 15th December is our annual carol concert. Whilst we are aware this is a mass gathering we are really keen to continue with this. Our students and staff have been rehearsing for a number of months, and we want to give them the opportunity to perform. Next week I will be sending information out about the extra precautions we are taking to allow this event to take place, this will include asking all attendees to take a lateral flow test before the arrival at the church and to wear a face covering. Our last day of term on Thursday 16th December will be a non-school uniform day, and it would be great if you could encourage your child to wear something Christmassy!

Earlier this week I sent information to all parents about the staggered return in January. If you have seen that information, please read about it here January Return Please note that whilst students are at home waiting for their test we will be providing on-line learning. If your child does not have a laptop you can request one here: Laptop Loan

This will be the last newsletter this term, so I would like to wish you all a very happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year to you and your family.

With thanks,

Paul Skipp

Headteacher

In line with the latest DfE guidance for testing students before their return to school in January, we will once again be operating a phased return to school in order to carry out one on-site lateral flow test before students return full time. The table below provides information on how we are proposing to manage this for each year group. Further details regarding specific times will be sent out before the end of term however we want you to be aware of our planned timescales with as much notice as possible. Following this phased return all students will be back in school for Monday 10th January 2022.

Please note that students taking external exams in January will be invited into school for their test on Tuesday 4th January. It is important that students are able to maximise their time in school before their exam. We recognise that this is before they were expecting to return however they will only need to come in for the test itself and will be free to return home as soon as this has been done. Parents of affected students will be notified of the intended time as soon as possible.

Congratulations to Peter Quintin in Year 10 who has passed his Grade 4 Guitar exam. Peter has been learning to play the guitar from an early age but has only started taking exams since Year 7. Last year all his lessons were online, so he has done very well to pass this exam.

Christmas Hamper collection

Wednesday 1st December we were extremely pleased to hand over a substantial collection of food for this year's Lions Christmas hamper appeal. This has been run in partnership with a local company called IMP, who came to collect from us. This was extra wonderful as the IMP managing director Mr Parrish is a former student at the school.

The year 8 pastoral team are extremely proud of the effort and contributions made by all the staff; however, we are especially proud of the year 8 tutor groups' hard work in this charitable event. Both 8B and 8G had amassed an amazing selection of goodies to assist those who find themselves in need in Trowbridge this Christmas.

Events such as this show we really are a school for the community.

Thank you everyone for your generosity and for helping to spread a little Christmas cheer.

Merry Christmas and Kind regards

Mrs Scott and the Year 8 team

Endangered Species Research in Year 7 Geography!

This term, Miss Wood’s Year 7 Geographers were tasked with researching endangered species in the tropical rainforests of the world.

The projects submitted were of really high quality this year and ranged from written reports including Reuben’s work on orangutans and Demir’s on gorillas to creative projects including Izzy’s pink river dolphins display board and Sophie’s poster on gorillas which we have also studied in lesson time.

Student’s voted on who they felt had created the most creative and informative projects. With Ava’s poison dart frog winning most creative and Darcy’s forest elephant research being voted most informative. Meanwhile, Miss Wood has awarded the best all-round project to Kacper for his creative giant otter environment display, combined with detailed research.

A huge well done to all of 7B for their clear commitment to their endangered species projects this term; with special mention going to Sym who created a detailed and professional display on orangutan. Miss Wood was so impressed she has asked Mr Skipp for a special prize to celebrate Sym’s hard work.

On Saturday 4th December 36 hardy participants continued their training aiming at making the 6-man Teams for the Ten Tors Event 2022.

In gorgeous autumnal sunshine we set off from Longbridge Deverill. As we climbed up over the first hill the views over Hill Deverill and Monkton Deverill were stunning, and the blue skies complimented the luscious green hills perfectly. Over the course of the day we traversed fields, woodland, pine forests and hills, whilst also passing through the lovely Wiltshire villages of Kingston Deverill and Tytherington. Passers-by complimented the students on their politeness and the shared navigation was of an excellent standard throughout, and the group completed their route more quickly than any group in the past.

It was a superb day - the students completed 19 miles and are keenly looking forward to our next hike around Avebury after Christmas. Huge thanks as always to volunteer Iain Richards and also to Mr Lord and Mrs Brooks for their help and support.
