NEWSLETTER 16 - 4 FEBRUARY 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have all had a good week.

As you know we have unfortunately had a number of staff and students off school with Covid recently and the higher numbers has meant that we had to ask Year 9 to stay at home for two days. These decisions are always difficult however we simply didn’t have the capacity to support all young people. The good news is that we are looking forward to welcoming all our year groups back to school on Monday.

It always amazes me how many opportunities our young people have at JOG, over the last few weeks we have seen young people join with the students councils, attend sports clubs and STEM Club, apply for the brilliant club, join in with public speaking competitions, attend D of E and Ten Tors training and even support younger students with reading. These opportunities are so valuable to young people to develop their cultural capital experiences, and I am delighted to see so many students enjoying them.

Next week our Year 11 students will continue with their second week of Mocks and amongst other things, Year 13 will have their parents evening on Thursday 10th February. Finally, thank you to all those parents that attended the mental health and well-being evening with Dr Dominique Thompson, we have received some really positive feedback.

Have a great weekend.

Bike Safety and Awareness in the Local Community

Please can students be mindful of others, and not cycle on the pavements before and after school.

Unfortunately this has occurred on several occasions whereby members of the public have to step into the road to avoid cyclists. This can be particularly unsafe for those pushing buggies or the elderly.

Signs of Spring seem to be getting earlier and earlier. This Peacock Butterfly was seen fluttering around the Dunston wildlife area on Wednesday.

Nest building has also begun, not the birds just yet but a year 7 Outdoor Learning group who were able to construct a nest big enough for four students!

Year 7 and Year 9 groups have also been taking on some construction tasks using traditional countryside techniques to complete some hazel fencing. This is a great way to produce a sustainable and efficient fence while the act of coppicing prolongs the life of the trees.  Mr. Little

School deadline for entries is 11th March

Year 10 mock - (Nut Free) Bakewell Tart

Today we have been focusing upon food provenance (British foods), Food Science (Protein denaturing, coagulation, dextrinisation and caramelisation) and developing practical skills (pastry making and handling, blind baking, creaming, testing for readiness).

The final product.

Some Year 13 students may remember Kale. Kale will be there, and it will be the first time he will have been at one of the fundraising events for himself!

Year 9 Netball

On Wednesday the Year 9 netball teams played their first games at home against Matravers School, St Augustines Catholic College and Melksham Oak Community School.

Chloe Inman was captain for the Yellow Team and Sophie Wilson for the White Team. All the netball players had been working hard during their training sessions in preparation for these matches.

The first game was a close game with equal possession of the ball, which was against Melksham Oak whereby The John of Gaunt teams were unfortunate to lose 3-6, player of the match went to Amelia Biggs and Christina Clarke. Next they were up against St Augustines, putting in key tactics and strategies which meant they won 8-4, players of the match went to Chloe Inman and Ella Robinson. The final game against Matravers was also a win, final score being 6-4 to The John of Gaunt School and players of the match went to Amelia and Ella.

Well done to all involved, they were all fantastic games to umpire and watch!

This week STEM club practised their dissecting skills by dissecting a fish. They identified key features such as the gills, spine and intestines. The real challenge however was removing the swim bladder without rupturing it.

Well done to Rory, Evan and Tom who successfully managed it!

Thank you to the Bath Rugby Foundation who have been delivering rugby teaching to a group of year 9 girls.

To all Year 11 Parents & Carers,

Please find below links to our revision presentations.  There are 4 separate links - one is an introduction from the Year 11 Leaders, followed by presentations from Science, English & Maths.  Please feel free to watch them all together or one at a time - whatever suits you best.  We hope you find the information useful, both for you and for your child.

We also intend to share these presentations with the students in our tutor time sessions after the mock exams & we will also email the links to all students.

If you have any questions, please contact the subject teachers directly, in the first instance.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish all our students the best of luck in their final set of mock exams which start on Monday.
