Cambridge OCR Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification Cambridge Advanced National in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate)
The Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care will develop knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare students for progression to undergraduate study. It covers equality, diversity and rights, health and safety, anatomy and physiology, person-centred approaches, mental health, long-term physiological conditions, public health strategies, sexual health and nutrition and lifestyles.
You will develop independence and confidence in using skills that are relevant to the sector and that prepare you for progressing to university courses where independent study skills are needed. You will develop the following transferable skills that can be used in both higher education and other life and work situations:
• Communicating and collaborating effectively with individuals
• Creating and presenting/delivering information to an individual.
• Independent learning, spending time outside of lessons completing research solve problems.
• Researching topic areas and recording research sources, then using them to interpret findings and present evidence.
• Recommending care and support for individuals.
• Presentation skills by presenting recommendations to others.
• Problem solving health and social care problems for others.
Content
OCR Health and Social Care Students:
- Take responsibility for their own learning
- Develop interpersonal and practical thinking skills
- Have a strong core base of knowledge
- Have real experience of effective teamwork
- Know how to work to a brief with set deadlines
- Efficiently manage time to complete tasks and processes
Assessment
For this qualification, students must complete six units:
• Two mandatory externally assessed units
- Principles of Health and social Care
- Anatomy and Physiology for health and social care
• Two mandatory NEA units
- Person-centred approach to care
- Supporting People with Mental health Conditions
• Two optional NEA units
- Supporting People in Relation to sexual health, Pregnancy and Postnatal Health
- Supporting healthy Nutrition and Lifestyles

Moving On
Health and Social Care is a widely recognised qualification enabling access to a variety of courses in higher education e.g. nursing, midwifery, teaching, social work etc. Students can also seek employment in the care and early years’ sectors. This qualification will complement other learning that you're completing at Key Stage 5.
