The ILD Transition group curriculum – years 7 & 8
English – In years 7 and 8 students follow the schemes of work created by the English department – however a differentiated version is used. For example, when studying a novel, the transition group will read a text that is more accessible to them.
In year 7, students will cover topics listed below:
- Oliver Twist
- Myths and Legends
In year 8, students will cover topics listed below:
- The Gothic and Macbeth
- The Jungle Book
- Animal Farm
Maths – in the transition groups, students will initially follow a curriculum based on KS2 objectives. This enables students to secure their knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Number Patterns/ Relationships and Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
- Geometry – Properties of Shapes
- Statistics – data handling
Students follow the KS3 Science curriculum and lessons are differentiated to ensure students are able to ensure students grasp key scientific concepts. Students will study topic in all three science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
In all three subject areas, Talk 4 Writing strategies are embedded. These strategies help students to develop their memory recall and support them to develop their skills and confidence to articulate their thoughts and ideas in written form.
Literacy and numeracy
All students in the transition group will have Literacy and Numeracy lessons. These are in the place of Modern Foreign Languages lessons. The aim of these lessons is to give students extra support in these core areas. Lessons are split into three sections with students undertaking the following three activities each lesson:
- Hegarty Maths
- Accelerated Reader (independent reading)
- Corrective reading intervention delivered by trained members of staff
Students in the transition group will complete the same homework as all other students in KS3. This is to be completed daily and is comprised of:
- Hegarty Maths
- Self quizzing using their Knowledge Organiser
We run a homework club after school in the Pitman Building on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3pm – 4pm for students who need support with their homework.
